[edit] Hidden Blade
Altaïr's most interesting weapon is a concealed, mechanical dagger similar to that of a Pata used for close-range assassinations. It is mounted on the inside of his left hand gauntlet, and springs into position from under his wrist with a fair amount of force. According to the game developers, the blade extends between his middle and little fingers through the space left by his amputated ring finger. This amputation was part of the initiation for becoming an assassin of the Hashshashin sect. In the game, Altair opens the blade by tilting this hand back to allow room for the blade. After the blade is open, if held in the open position, the blade comes to rest in the space formerly occupied by his ring finger. For low profile kills, Altair approaches slowly, places his palm against their abdomen or kidney and triggers the blade to extend into their body. Persons in the area will not notice right away until the target collapses, and if Altair remains near the body, they will suspect him. It can also be used for high profile kills, while flashy, they are very obvious to everyone around. Altair approaches at a run, leaps into the air and pounces on his target, knocking them to the ground a driving the blade into their neck or head. Similarly, he can throw an opponent to the ground and kill them in a similar fashion. The low profile kill is recommended for assassinating targets from the informer missions, and when approaching groups of enemies that are unaware in order to kill the most skilled opponent immediately. The high profile kill can be used when a roof guard is turning towards you and you are alone, or for a fleeing assassination target. The Hidden Blade is the only weapon that you can use to kill the nine main targets.
Altair can actually use the Hidden blade while in combat. It is your choice if you want to go through the trouble. First you have to switch to it, which takes about two seconds, and the only way to fight with it is to do counter-attacks or pounce on an enemy who was either doing the taunting animation or the fear animation(either can be noted as the guard will lower his sword). When you do, Altair will plunge the hidden blade into the face, stomach, or back of the head of the soldier you are fighting.
However, if you can master the timing, you can use this as a very quick way to defeat enemies, even the main boss at the end can be killed in one well-timed hit from the hidden blade.
[edit] Long Sword
The long sword is a straight-bladed medieval sword, and changes as the game progresses when Altair increases in rank. It is slower than the short blade, but when attacking is more powerful. It is probably the weapon you will use the most at close range.
The final version of the blade is a partially curved saber, which you start off with and then work up to, finally getting it for the last two missions.
[edit] Short Blade
A short, curved blade that has fast 6. The direction of your attacks can be changed quicker than the long sword, allowing you to take on multiple enemies within close proximity to one another. This weapon is selected with the same button assigned to throwing knives.
The game's engine automatically substitutes throwing knives when your target is far enough away, and switches to the Short Blade when you are in melee range. The Short Blade is upgraded once during the game. Like the longsword upgrades, its appearance changes slightly and it's damage increases.
[edit] Throwing Knives
A long range weapon that can be used to take out guards from a distance. You only have a limited number, but you can gain more by pick-pocketing thugs or entering the Masyaf stronghold. You gain a larger capacity for throwing knives as you progress, beginning with 5 and maxing out at 15.
Throwing Knives kills the target instantly if it hits them. This, however, doesn't work on the nine primary targets that you must kill. This also doesn't work on the 60 Templars found in-game.
