What are you listening to?

  • As some of you may or may not know, music's one of my biggest passions and I always like to expand my musical knowledge. As such I was wondering about the music tastes of my fellow AC Wikians.

Among many other things, one song that I keep coming back to recently is Harvest Home by Mark Lanegan, who has one of the best voices in modern rock.

So what've you guys been listening to recently?

    • Listening to this at the moment:

I have it on as 'white noise' while I'm translating, basically :P

Otherwise, my music tastes should be known to you already. Mostly contemporary pop and original soundtracks from videogames, television series and movies. Along with the whole mix of trance, electronic and whatever else falls into the genre of music that's in that link.

    • Crookandcharlatan: That is exactly the kind of music that would come to mind if I think of your music taste.

The.Outsider: Every night I went to bed this past week I always had songs from the soundtrack running through my head. And I consider that a good thing.

    • That's for sure a good thing. It's a great listen when you just want to relax.

    • As bizarre as it may seem, I personally prefer listening to soundtracks from movies or games. Perhaps because I immediately associate the music with certain scenes and feelings, or maybe it's because I can enjoy the music without being distracted from tasks.

Occasionally, I'll listen to 'real' music, but I have no particular taste there.

    • That's not at all bizarre. I recall Steven Spielberg said that as a teenager he bought the Lawrence of Arabia soundtrack because that was the closest thing to video at the time. Movie music is the direct descendant of classical music.

Of course, soundtrack =/= background compositions. Movies and games introduce us to pop songs all the time eg. Be My Baby in Mean Streets, Afternoon Delight in Anchorman, Come and Get Your Love in Guardians of the Galaxy.

    • That's not weird, Crim. I generally prefer to listen to soundtracks over other music. However, I do listen to other stuff.

    • Woodkid  is bae <3 Discovered him through that  Revelations trailer, and I can't think of a song of his that I dislike. EDIT: Strangely his Amazon page doesn't seem to have all of his music on there. Odd because I swear it used to.

Pink Floyd also. Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here to some extent I can't listen to while doing anything else as I feel I'm not concentrating enough on the music. My parents kept their old record player from the 70s as well as original copies of most of Pink Floyd's albums and sometimes I like to just sit and listen to them, doing nothing else for 45 minutes. Which is really strange because I know no-one else my age who does this. But my oh my is some of their music good...

Soundtracks are good for working to; the AC2 and Game of Thrones soundtracks are the ones I mostly listen to, though I occasionally pop on the Lord of The Rings one as well.

More generally, I've been getting into psychedelia and indie surprisingly much recently, through Tame Impala, Pond, Temples, etc... To be honest the only type of music I dislike is tween-pop (One Direction, Bieber, etc.), really heavy metal, and some rap; I tend to find music I like in pretty much every other genre otherwise. Yes, even dubstep. (  .__.)

    • Part of me died reading the word 'bae' here on the wiki.

That's pretty normal, Crimson. I like to play certain tracks or songs to relive memories and scenes in my head as well. Though nothing beats casual music for me.

Kabutsu: If you like Ramin Djawadi's work on Game of Thrones, you ought to check out Person of Interest. He did the soundtrack for that show too, and it's one of the few ones that I really enjoy listening to on a casual basis. Specifically this track. They also made very good use of "Welcome to the Machine" from Wish You Were Here.

Haven't heard of Pond, but I do like Tame Impala and Temples. Saw Temples live last year and will probably be seeing them again next year.

There's a whole lot of music I don't like, mostly pop music, alternative metal and 'mainstream' techno. This is a techno song I've had on replay the past few days, great video too. (The version with Mark Lanegan is great too!)

Haha, that 'bae' was ironic. Obviously.

Though Woodkid is a good artist.

    • I already shared my deviating taste in music on the IRC several times, but I'm not unwilling to go public and show off my weirdness to the world. So here, try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwMFFjv1Po4 :)

That not bizarre, i'm actually like that, tbh. I didn't like SoAD's Chop Suey song, but when it was used for Mortal Kombat X's epic launch trailer i bagan to listen to listen to it until i hated it. When it comes from a movie or i game i feel i can truly enjoy it.

I tend to listen to american or japanese music, even tough my mother tongue is Spanish i rarely listen to Spanish songs, i enjoy melancholic and soothing tracks, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHRL-JfXhFQ

    • I'm partial to a bit of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, even though I have no understanding of the words, the energy is enough.

But I'm mostly just a passive listener to the radio, or games soundtracks. I don't get around to watching enough movies to call myself a fan of their soundtracks.

I know, but it is still the stuff of nightmares.

Actually surprised to see so many people listen to mainly soundtracks and Japanese-language music.
