Side memories were memories of ancestors that could not be exactly determined in the timeline as a historical event. As a result, side memories were optional missions that could be accessed at any time through the Animus.
When Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad was hunting the nine Templars, he also saved citizens who were being abused by the guards, climbed towers and tall buildings to access viewpoints for a tactical advantage, as well as collected flags of the varying factions involved in the Third Crusade. During his time in Cyprus, Altaïr also collected gold, silver and bronze Templar coins.
Ezio Auditore da FirenzeEdit
When Ezio Auditore da Firenze set out to avenge the death of his family, he also beat up unfaithful husbands; participated in races against other free-runners; completed assassination contracts for Lorenzo de' Medici; couriered letters across cities; visited viewpoints and Templar lairs; took seals from tombs of old Assassins; collected the statuettes of Roman gods and goddesses; renovated Monteriggioni and collected feathers to commemorate his fallen brother. He also tore down wanted posters, bribed heralds and killed witnesses to reduce his notoriety.
During his time in Rome, Ezio continued to complete assassination contracts – this time for Niccolò Machiavelli – and collect feathers, but in addition to those he also began to liberate Rome from the Borgia by saving citizens, renovating Rome and assassinating key Templar supporters. He also destroyed the war machines created by Leonardo da Vinci for the Borgia and dispersed a secret cult named the Followers of Romulus. Following this, Ezio completed many assignments for the city's thieves, courtesans and mercenaries. Knowing that he could not take down the Borgia alone, he started to recruit people into the Assassin Order and sent them on contracts throughout Europe. At certain moments during his time in Rome, he relived repressed memories of Cristina Vespucci. Lastly, he removed the 101 Borgia flags from Rome.
When Ezio later visited Constantinople in search of the Masyaf Keys, he recaptured the Assassin Dens which were taken over by the Templars and earned all of Piri Reis's bombs. Just like he did in Rome, he recruited Assassins and trained them into Master Assassins over time – this time sending them to various parts of the Mediterranean and slowly eroded Templar rule. Accompanying this, Ezio renovated some buildings in Constantinople and defended Assassin Dens from Templar attacks, collected Ishak Pasha's memoir pages and found the location of his hidden armor, as well as finding rare copies of books to give them to Sofia Sartor for reprinting. Through this, he found many secret locations, aiding his efforts for the Masyaf Keys.
During the third Golden Age of Piracy, the pirate Edward Kenway collected sea shanties for his crew and blueprints to upgrade his ship the Jackdaw. Through the Caribbean, he freed and saved pirates, attacked naval convoys and infiltrated plantations to steal their resources. He also hunted animals on land and sea to upgrade his equipment. He renovated his hideout in Great Inagua and killed Templar agents for their keys to open a set of armor located in his bureau. He also searched Mayan stelae and unearthed keystones to unlock another set of armor in Tulum. Using the Jackdaw, Edward captured forts and completed naval contracts, and sank five legendary ships. With a diving bell, Edward found chests from the Spanish Treasure Fleet and infiltrated smugglers' hideout. In order to help the Assassins and earn reales, he completed assassination contracts to kill Templars and cruel slave masters. With his fleet he assured supplies for many cities through the Atlantic Ocean.
During the time of the Seven Years' War, when the Templar Shay Cormac was set out to hunt down Assassins, he also collected blueprints to upgrade his ship, the Morrigan. He inspected cave paintings, collected sea shanties, and also was on the search for war letters. To scale down the Assassin influence throughout the Atlantic, River Valley and New York, Shay took over Assassin-affiliated gang headquarters. To ensure the territories claimed were protected and retained a sense of order, Shay took over French settlements and forts, and spent money renovating buildings. He also would counter Assassins by intercepting their pigeons, which were used to assign assassination contracts. Shay then would go and protect the target, killing those who would try to harm said target. With his ship, Shay helped the British Navy attacking French convoys, freed British prisoners and sank seven legendary ships. His fleet aided the British Crown through the globe during the war. Shay also hunted on land and sea to upgrade his equipment.
In addition, Shay found various keys to help him acquire new outfits. After collecting all the fragments of a Viking sword, Shay was lead to a Viking grave. Upon digging up the grave, he obtained a Viking outfit from the buried chest. Throughout his travels, he used numerous treasure maps to uncover a multitude of buried Templar relics. When brought together at the wreck of the HMS Sapphire, the relics unlocked a set of 11th-century Templar armor stored aboard. Furthermore, Shay collected a series of Templar crosses left behind by Sir James Gunn, a legendary Scottish Templar, which he then used to recover the late knight's armor hidden in a warehouse in Fort de Sable. Finally, while exploring the Atlantic, Shay came across a series of stone Native pillars; by rearranging the rocks, these pillars revealed the totems contained within, which were used to unlock a set of Native armor.
Aveline de GrandpréEdit
During the time of Spanish Louisiana, the Assassin Aveline de Grandpré collected jeweled brooches, voodoo dolls, Assassins' coins, mushrooms, alligator eggs, mayan statuettes and pages of her mother's diary. She also renovated tailors and dressing chambers in New Orleans and the Louisiana Bayou, and expanded her father's trading company throughout the Atlantic. She also completed assassination contracts, killed corrupt business rivals, freed slaves and investigated a series of murders.
During the American Revolutionary War, Ratonhnhaké:ton collected Benjamin Franklin's almanac pages, collected feathers and located Captain Kidd's treasure. He freed the North American trade routes from pirates, expanded the Davenport Homestead and mapped out the underground tunnel networks which were used by the Freemasons. He then liberated the districts of Boston and New York from Templar control, attacked british forts reducing taxes and giving them to the Continental Army, hunted down dangerous beasts, disproved myths created by the Frontiersmen, and beat up champions of the Boston Brawlers. He also delivered letter, crafted objects and killed Templar targets.
In the alternate-reality created by the Apple of Eden, Ratonhnhaké:ton liberated convoys and found lucid memories in the Frontier, Boston and New York. He saved citizens from wolves, fed starving civilians and saved them from the bluecoats.
During the French Revolution, the Assassin Arno Dorian collected cockades and artefacts through Paris and Versailles and bicornes in Franciade. He renovated the Café Théâtre, fighting the Acte des Apôtres, bought others cafés where he received contracts from the Council. With others Assassins, he also managed difficult missions and heists for the Brotherhood. Besides his duty for the Assassins, Arno helped notables citizens of Paris as Marie Tussaud or Antoine Lavoisier. On the advices of Eugène François Vidocq, Arno solved many murders in Paris and later in Franciade. He also solves Nostradamus Enigmas and unlocked Thomas de Carneillon's armor. In Franciade, he discovered the Eagle of Suger by solving the Suger's Legacy.
Jacob and Evie FryeEdit
During the Victorian era, Jacob and Evie Frye collected beer bottles, illustrated posters, pressed flowers, and the royal correspondence of Queen Victoria. They also collected the Secrets of London to unlock the vault of Michel Reuge. Through their gang, the Rooks, the Fryes conquered the boroughs of London from the Templar-affiliated Blighters, and weakened the Blighters' influence by assassinating Templar agents, arresting criminals with bounties, and liberating child workers from factories run by illegal labor. To settle claim over territory, the Rooks liberated gang strongholds and challenged the Blighters to gang wars. In addition, Jacob and Evie assisted Agnes MacBean, Charles Dickens, Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Queen Victoria, Artie and Henry Raymond, and Duleep Singh in various activities during their time in London.
During the Autumn of Terror twenty years later, Evie Frye worked to reduce the influence of Jack the Ripper and his criminal network. To assist Frederick Abberline, she arrested criminals, protected suspects while escorting them to Scotland Yard, and closed down illegal fight clubs by driving out their inhabitants. To assist Arthur Weaversbrook, she interrogated senders of Jack the Ripper's letters to cease their circulation, eliminated Jack's lieutenants, and hijacked cargo that was smuggled in by the Rooks. To assist Nellie, Evie liberated prostitutes who were kidnapped in carriages and held hostage in brothels, and also apprehended men who assaulted prostitutes by forcing them through public humiliation by on-lookers and Nellie herself.
