The Salpêtrière Hospital (French: Hôpital de la Salpêtrière), later merged with another hospital and renamed the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, is an institute located in the La Bièvre district of Paris, France. During the French Revolution, it was as much an asylum as a prison, housing many individuals that were deemed unfit to walk the streets, such as vagabonds, beggars, and prostitutes.
Around this time, an asylum warden named Leroux was murdered by his deputy Hugo Soulière, who had tired of waiting to be promoted. However, the Assassin Arno Dorian investigated the crime and realized Soulière was the culprit despite the latter's extensive efforts to cover up his tracks; the deputy was subsequently arrested and brought to justice.
Jacques Roux, a radical Roman Catholic priest, was transferred to the Salpêtrière Hospital at some point, but the Templars intended to release him and have him continue the revolution, as Maximilien de Robespierre's reputation had begun to weaken. A group of Assassins attempted to assassinate the priest, but failed and were imprisoned at the asylum. On 10 February 1794, Roux was released, but Arno and a team of Assassins, having freed their captured comrades, assassinated him before he could leave the property.
