ships commissioned by governments to attack ships of enemy governments in times of war. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the Royal Navy commissioned privateers such as Edward Thatch, Benjamin Hornigold, and Edward Kenway, but when the war ended, privateers became unnecessary, leading many of them to resort to piracy as an easier way to make a living.
