"I'm alive, but Egypt is out of balance. You must know, Medjay, the law is harmony between all peoples. May Serapis unite us all."
―Nanefer to Bayek after his rescue, 48 BCE.[src]-[m]

Nanefer was an Egyptian orator who lived in Soknopaiou Nesos during the 1st century BCE.

Biography[]

An orphan from Soknopaiou Nesos, Nanefer later served as an orator around 48 BCE. During this period of time, the Greek quarter of the town was plagued by a supposed "curse": various residents and travellers were murdered, which was attributed to the snake goddess Wadjet, due to the presence of snakes in the area where the deaths occurred. In reality, the "curse" was caused by a group of cultists who worshipped Wadjet and were attempting to eliminate Greek influence in the region. As such, Nanefer began reporting the deaths to the residents of the town, warning them to avoid the quarter for their safety.[1]

That year, the Medjay, Bayek of Siwa, visited the town to investigate. His appearance frightened Nanefer, causing him to stutter while giving his speeches. Without difficulty, Nanefer informed Bayek of the "curse" and directed him to the Greek quarter to investigate. Sheshanka, the leader of the cultists, later had Nanefer kidnapped and brought to their hideout west of the town, where he was to be sacrificed to Wadjet. However, he was eventually rescued by Bayek, who had found out about his whereabouts from a cave beneath the town.[1]
