DialogueEdit

ACIII-HideandSeek 1

Kaniehtí:io along with her son, Ratonhnhaké:ton

  • Kaniehtí:io: Time passed. The child grew inside me. And then he entered the world. He had his father's features, but enough of me that he did not appear a stranger. In the end it mattered little. My people loved him as their own. I miss Haytham sometimes. He may have even loved me, in his own way. But his eyes... His eyes were ever fixed on the future - one in which he and his Templar brethren controlled all. My greatest fear is that one day I shall look into the face of my son and see the same dark hunger there.

Kaniehtí:io found her son Ratonhnhaké:ton reading a journal, which he dropped and kicked under his mat.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: Good morning, mother.
  • Kaniehtí:io: Hmmm... And what are you up to?
  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: Nothing. I, uh... I was only...

Kanen'tó:kon ran into the longhouse during the conversation.

  • Kanen'tó:kon: Ratonhnhaké:ton, come play with us! The others have gone hunting and we're bored.

Ratonhnhaké:ton shuffled past his mother hesitantly before walking away.

  • Kaniehtí:io: Go on. But do not venture past the valley.
  • Child 1: This way!
  • Mother 1: Stay out of the mud! It took me days to wash the stains from your clothes! No better than beasts...
  • Mother 2: Be home by sunset!
  • Child 2: Yes mother.
  • Child 3: Yes mother.
  • Man: Careful!
  • Child 3: Sorry!
  • Child 2: Go home! Shoo! Home!
  • Man: Take care, children, that you do not leave the valley.
  • Child 2: Maybe we should go back...
  • Child 1: They say there are wolves out here large as bears...
  • Child 2: ... and strange men who shoot fire from their hands.
  • Child 3: I heard they live in stone villages...
  • Child 1: ... filled with victims taken from these woods!
  • Child 2: Don't listen to them.
  • Child 1: Almost there!

Ratonhn:haké:ton then followed the other children into the forest. The children made it to a large rock and grouped there.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: What will we play?
  • Kanen'tó:kon: Hide and seek? Draw.

Kanen'tó:kon picked up five sticks and made each of his friends draw one of the five. Ratonhnhaké:ton drew the shortest stick of the five.

Ratonhnhaké:ton and his friends drawing sticks

  • Kanen'tó:kon: You're it!

The other children laughed and ran off to hide while Ratonhnhaké:ton unhappily counted.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: One, two, three four...

A small amount of time passed.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: ... One hundred!

Ratonhnhaké:ton analyzed clues left behind by his friends, and found Kanen'tó:kon.

  • Kanen'tó:kon: You're too good at this...

Ratonhnhaké:ton found two more of his friends.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: There you are!
  • Child 1: Awww...
  • Child 2: How did you know? Can we go fishing later? We should look for shells when we're done! I'm hungry.
  • Child 1: I'll do better next time. You'll see. I can't believe you found me... I've got the best idea for my next hiding place...

Ratonhnhaké:ton found the last of his friends.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: Boo!

The children returned to draw sticks again.

  • Kanen'tó:kon: Let's play again!
  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: Your turn!

This time Kanen'tó:kon drew the shortest stick, and he went to count while the rest of the children hid.

  • Kanen'tó:kon: One, two, three, four...

Once Ratonhnhaké:ton found a hiding spot, he heard rustling around him, and a large man grabbed Ratonhnhaké:ton and threw him to the ground.

  • Church: What have we here?

Church proceeded to point a musket at Ratonhnhaké:ton. Ratonhnhaké:ton tried to run away from the men but was tripped by Charles Lee. After handing his musket to Thomas Hickey, Charles stepped towards Ratonhnhaké:ton menacingly. After rolling Ratonhnhaké:ton over, he spoke.

ACIII-HideandSeek 6

Ratonhnhaké:ton spitting at Charles Lee

  • Lee: You look... familiar. Where have I seen you before?

Ratonhnhaké:ton spat in Lee's face.

  • Lee: That wasn't very nice.

Lee grabbed Ratonhnhaké:ton's arm, and slammed him into a tree.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: Let me go!
  • Lee: Listen to that, he knows English.
  • Hickey: Smart for a savage.
  • Lee: Spirited, too.

Ratonhnhaké:ton struggled but it was no use against Lee's strength. Lee began to choke Ratonhnhaké:ton.

  • Lee: We have...questions for your elders. Only tell us where your village is, boy, and you can go.
  • Johnson: Best do as he asks, child.
  • Lee: I could snap your neck, you know. A little more pressure and POP! The sad little flame of your life extinguished. You are a nothing. A speck of dust. You and all your ilk. Living in the dirt like animals, oblivious to the true ways of the world. The wiser among you recognize the shape of the future. They throw themselves at our feet and beg mercy. But not you, it seems. No... You cling desperately to your ways. Too ignorant to know your folly. But I am not unkind.

Lee dropped Ratonhnhaké:ton to the ground.

ACIII-HideandSeek 7

Lee strangling Ratonhnhaké:ton

  • Lee: And so I spare you, that you may carry word to your people. Let them know the sooner we are given what we seek, the sooner you can return to your pathetic, empty lives. A fair trade, is it not?

Ratonhnhaké:ton, obviously struggling to regain his breath, sat up.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: What...is your...name?

Lee chuckled.

  • Lee: Charles Lee. Why do you ask?
  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: So I can...find you.
  • Lee: I look forward to it.

Lee motioned the group to leave, and William Johnson knocked Ratonhnhaké:ton with the butt of his musket. When Ratonhnhaké:ton awoke, he made his way slowly to the village. When he saw his village in flames, he began to run.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: No! Mother! Where is my mother?

He ran throughout the village, unable to find Kaniehtí:io. He finally heard her screams from their home. After running around the village and maneuvering around fallen roofs and planks. He found his mother under a pile of fallen wood.

  • Kaniehtí:io: In here...
  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: Coming! Help us! I am here, I am here. It is going to be fine.
ACIII-HideandSeek 12

Ratonhnhaké:ton carried away from his mother

  • Kaniehtí:io: No, my son. You must leave. Now.
  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: Not without you.
  • Kaniehtí:io: It's too late for that. You must be strong, Ratonhnhaké:ton. You must be brave.
  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: Stop it. Stop it!
  • Kaniehtí:io: You will think yourself alone, but know that I will be at your side. Always and forever.

A man from the village ran up and grabbed Ratonhnhaké:ton, and began to carry him away.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: NO! STOP! LET ME GO! LET ME SAVE HER!

The entire longhouse began to cave in.

  • Kaniehtí:io: I love you.

The building was engulfed by flames.

  • Ratonhnhaké:ton: MOTHER!

OutcomeEdit

The village in Kanatahséton was burned down, and Kaniehtí:io died, leaving Ratonhnhaké:ton an orphan of the village.
