"We ride for the Green Dragon Tavern. The proprietors are... eccentric, but the rooms are spacious and they do not pry."
―Charles Lee, 1754.[src]
AC3 Green Dragon Tavern

Green Dragon Tavern

The Green Dragon Tavern is a small tavern located in Boston's North End.

History

The tavern was owned by William Douglass until his death in 1752, and the property was passed to his daughter Catherine Kerr and nephew Cornelius Douglass. From 1754 onwards, the Green Dragon Tavern was a meeting place for the Colonial Rite of the Templar Order, after Haytham Kenway's arrival to the British colonies in North America.[1]

In 1766, the tavern was bought by the Freemasons and renamed "The Freemasons Arms"; since the sign above the door was still a green dragon, people kept using the Green Dragon Tavern name. Catherine stayed on as the innkeeper.[1]

During the American Revolution, the Green Dragon Tavern was frequently visited by the Sons of Liberty, namely Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, as a place to plot and conspire, earning the tavern the nickname of the "Headquarters of the Revolution". In his search for Charles LeeRatonhnhaké:ton briefly visted the tavern to interrogate one of Lee's henchmen into revealing his target's location.[1]

The building was demolished in 1854, and a new Green Dragon Tavern was built elsewhere in North End. In 2012, the Assassin cell consisting of William Miles, Desmond Miles, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane visited the tavern after having stolen a First Civilization power source from a building near the One World Trade Center in New York City.[2]

Trivia

  • On the second floor of the tavern, Ratonhnhaké:ton could find a chest in a room which contained Haytham's funds.
  • The name of the tavern, may be a reference to The Green Dragon Inn of the Shire in Lord of the Rings.
