Something that's been bothering me, but that I've been putting off. As much as we'd like to use the categories as a navigation system, that is not possible if the categorization is inconsistent or messy. Which brings me to this... how do I categorize the various islands in Black Flag?

So far I've seen the "Islands" categories, which seems fair enough as a general category. I've seen the countries like "Cuba" and "Jamaica" - I'm guessing they could be categorized as "Islands", while fishing villages and plantations and the like on said islands (e.g. Cuba) can just use the Cuba category, in this case at least. For small individual islands, I think they could use both the "Islands" category as well the umbrella term, if they're part of a group of islands like "The Bahamas" or the "Cayman Islands".

That leaves me with the "Caribbean" category. What do we use this for? O.o

Anyways, feedback would be awesome :) I'm open to other suggestions. Crook The Constantine District 20:20, October 3, 2014 (UTC)

Use location database terms like coconut beaches, fishermen's villages etc, no need to overthink it. --Alientraveller (talk) 20:24, October 3, 2014 (UTC)
Hmmm, no offense, Alientraveller, but I find that approach a bit simplistic. Not only do the terms "coconut beaches" and "fishermen's villages" sound a tad gamey for my liking, they are also not really usable for locations we might encounter outside Black Flag.
No, I think we are better off sticking with the categories we have. I'm just not sure if there's a consensus on which one is used when and for what. And if one doesn't exist yet, I'd like for one to be reached ^^; Thanks for the quick reponse, however! Crook The Constantine District 20:33, October 3, 2014 (UTC)

Update!

Alright, so after some discussion on the IRC, Sima came up with the following system for island categorization (here's hoping I can explain this clearly):

  • The "Islands" category will serve as a general category. For articles, I imagine it'd be used only for islands that are small and not part of a larger group/country.
    • We'll create an "Island countries" category and a "Islands of [country]" (e.g. Islands of the Bahamas) category, which will be subcategories of the "Islands" category.
  • The "Caribbean" category will also serve as a general category.

To illustrate this (I find these kinds of systems easier to understand with concrete examples):

  • An article such as Sacrifice Island would use the "Islands" and "Caribbean" categories, as it is a single island that doesn't belong to any groups and also isn't a country.
  • An article such as Mariguana Island would use the "Islands of the Bahamas" category. That category would then be a subcategory of "Islands" and "The Bahamas", with "The Bahamas" category being put into the "Caribbean" category.
  • An article such as Cuba would use the "Island countries" and "Cuba" categories. "Island countries" would be a subcategory of "Islands", while "Cuba" would be put into the "Caribbean" category.

I hope that came out at least somewhat understandable :s I will be putting this system into practice as soon as possible, but feel free to voice your opinions. Improvements can always be made :) Alright, thanks for reading! Crook The Constantine District 14:13, October 5, 2014 (UTC)
