Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Vimeur, vicomte de Rochambeau (7 April 1755 – 16 October 1813) was an officer in the French Army during the late 18th century and early 19th century.
After the death of Charles Leclerc in 1802, Rochambeau was sent to the French colony of Saint-Domingue in order to supress the rebellion there. With Leclerc having failed to disarm the rebels following the surrender of Toussaint Louverture, they rose up again under the leadership of Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
After his defeat during the Battle of Vertières, Rochambeau pulled out of Saint-Domingue under the cover of a storm, knowing the colony to be lost.
