- "Xavier could have told me Christian was in danger, but he didn't, because he knew that would pull me away from our precious mission."
- ―Joseph about Christian's death, 2015.[src]
At some point before September 2015, during a mission for the Brotherhood the two lovers were separated, but later as Christian was in difficulty, the leader of the mission, Xavier Chen, kept it from Joseph to let him be focused on their objective, a choice that resulted in the death of Christian. All the other Assassins involved also died, except for Xavier and Joseph, the latter faking his death to plot his revenge on Xavier and the Brotherhood that in his mind robbed him of the love of his life.
