Bridget Bishop (c. 1632 – 1692) was an English colonist who was accused of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials.

Biography[]

Bishop was a well-known woman in Salem, having been married thrice and regarded as having loose morals and bad character. Dressed in clothing considered flamboyant by contemporary standards, she was also known for drinking and gambling and rumors of her being a witch had spread in the countryside years before her death.[1]

On 2 June 1692, Bishop was brought before the newly established Court of Oyer and Terminer, where she was accused by Mercy Lewis and Abigail Williams of witchcraft. Although she was not the first to be accused of this crime, Bishop was the first to be tried for it. Due to her previous history, it was believed that her trial would be the easiest to win.[1] On 10 June, the Templars William Stoughton and Samuel Parris, who were the secret instigators of the trials, oversaw her hanging, where she pleaded her innocence to no avail. Bishop would be the first victim of the trials.[2]
