The Assassin's Creed: Revelations soundtrack is a collection of music tracks written by Danish composer Jesper Kyd and Scottish composer Lorne Balfe that were used as background music in Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Balfe, with German composer Hans Zimmer as producer, scored the music for cutscenes and multiplayer, while Kyd composed most of the music for the gameplay elements. It was released digitally on 15 November 2011. Players who pre-ordered the Signature Edition of Revelations received only the album's first CD.

Background[]

On 28 August 2011, Ubisoft partnered with the music recording website UJAM and Zimmer's California-based film score company Remote Control Productions, Inc to create a UJAM campaign page for a then-unannounced project.[1] Two weeks later on 8 September, Eurogamer revealed that Ubisoft was holding a public audition for a vocalist to perform the main theme of Assassin's Creed: Revelations.[2] The singing contest was open to all adult residents of Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.[3] Participants were invited to sign up to UJAM, record their own vocals[1][3] over the temp track in the contest's promotional video,[4] and submit their entry to be voted on with "likes" and shared by friends, family, and the general public. Submissions and voting would last until 10:00 pm PDT[5] on 19 September[3] at which point the top 20 voted submissions would advance to a jury consisting of Zimmer, Balfe, and Ubisoft music producer Simon Landry.[6] The winner, who would be announced before 30 September,[3] would be rewarded with a chance to visit a professional studio to record their voice, receive credits in Revelations and its soundtrack, and be given a cash prize of $1,000 USD.[6]

Within merely two days, the contest gained enough momentum through online word-of-mouth that the rest of the marketing team's intended ads on Facebook and YouTube as well as promoted Google searches were put on hold in favor of monitoring the entries until the campaign ended. By 18 September, what would be the final tally of 346 entries[7] from a majority female demographic[8] were submitted with a cumulative then-total of 46,000 "likes".[7]

Among the contestants was 18-year-old Madeline Bell, a woman from the town of Moraga, California who was a Health Science student at Saint Mary's College.[9] At the suggestion of her then-boyfriend after he saw IGN's article about the event,[10][11] she posted a video to her YouTube channel on the contest's opening day announcing her participation before asking her followers to vote on and share her entry.[12] Her minute-and-a-half long[13] track "Sicarius"[5][14]—Latin for "assassin"—was inspired by the ethereal sounds in another of Ubisoft's titles, the 2003 video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and the 2010 film of the same name,[10] and reached the 10th slot in the Top 20 on the final day with a total of 787 "likes" and just shy of 300,000 replays.[5]

After 2 days of deliberation, the jury picked Madeline as the winner, saying that her quality of voice and tone felt true to what they thought best represented the Assassin's Creed series.[5] Later that day in the afternoon, as Madeline told her followers in another YouTube video, Landry personally called to congratulate her on winning and arranged a meeting in San Francisco.[15] About a month later on 10 October, UJAM posted another YouTube video showcasing behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Madeline and Balfe regarding the process behind the recording session in Remote Control Studios' Santa Monica studio.[10]

Despite the soundtrack's length, a few pieces of music were not released. These include music from the memories "A Hard Ride" and "End of the Road", Den Defense gameplay, and "Party Hard" from the fourth memory "Metropolis" in Desmond's Journey. A decade after the album's release, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Madeline posted another YouTube video at a fan's request[16] of the "Assassin's Creed Theme" choral arrangement in a stairwell at the hospital she worked in as a doctor.[17]
